It was founded by a theater director, reformer of the Georgian theatre Kote Marjanishvili. Already after the first appearence the company won popular acclaim. Before the first tours which started in early 1930s, the theatre was invited to move to Tbilisi. Since its inception the company created a very interesting repertoire due to the devoted work of talented directors, actors, designers and composers that established the lasting aesthetics of this theatre, which has always vividly expressed artistic-ideological stance and public expectations prevailing in Georgia.During this period, about 400 performances were produced and most of them were crucial, reflecting social atmosphere dipicted by artistic devices in defferent stages of its development. It is essential that the repertoire preserved not only original Georgian, but also examples of European Drama. Marjanishvili Theater is a great supporter of Georgian actors and directors in creating and realizing their ambitions and new initiatives in Georgian theatre. Even though the Soviet system restricted Georgian artists to show their skills abroad widely, Marjanishvili Theater still managed to participate in different art and theater festivals like Edinburgh Festival, International Festival in Madrid, International Shakespeare conference, Eugine O’Neal’s Theatre Center, it also toured Germany, Japan etc, where critics and public alike have been enchanted by Georgians passionate and innovate approach to the theatre and to the life itself. The company had underlined its adherence to the classical theatrical traditions as well as to the introduction of contemporary dimensions, until the reforms of the Theatre began in the 70s due to a large vacuum created by the Soviet regime. Marjanishvili Theatre became a place where actors, directors, writers, and designers were indeed given better opportunities to exchange their new ideas and practices in order to develop and transform existing traditions, while having strongest back up from the legendary Georgian artists, who still maintained the original Marjanishvili style. Theatrical critics used to point out:...They succeed in bringing the audience to share its views, become its allies and cothinkers. They do not talk about art, they create it . The Theatre has two sections: 450 seats (main hall); 70 seats (small hall); It also runs a branch in Telavi. Theater has a permanent company. General Manager: Gaioz Kandelaki; Artistic Director: Otar Megvinetukhutsesi. simon machabeli stage design tbilisi georgia edinburgh machabeli.com
